SelfHackathon
SelfHackathon had three different websites to showcase their services and their instructors. I participated in an academic project that was so successful, the client used our designs to create a new website.

I worked redesigning the website for Self Hackathon, a company that helps to build confidence and self improvement, using psychology, neuro-science, neuro-linguistic programs, and hypnosis. Self Hackathon provides workshops, conferences, online programs, and one on one coaching. The client needed to improve the website while maintaining the logo and brand colors. The company had 3 websites, and we had 3 weeks to propose a new website. My role was to lead the UX Research.
Goals
Showcase Self Hackathon work, and bring more people to the website
Improve the information architecture
Consolidate the 3 websites, and redesigning content strategy
Opportunities
Self Hackathon had 3 different websites that needed to be consolidated
Self Hackathon needed to prioritize its mission statement, and showcase the value of its services in order to entice users to sign up online
There was no information about their other services
There was not enough references and credentials about their research, and the experts that support Self Hackathon services

Deliverables
I led the UX Research, interviewed the client and stakeholders, created element analysis, feature comparison, sitemap, user flows, and user journey. Additionally, I created personas, produced screeners and conducted interviews, led all the user testing, and created the research documentation for the client. I worked with the Project manager and the Graphic Designer.
My contribution
The new SelfHackathon website has a user centered design that brings more online visitors
The new SelfHackathon website improved showcasing their services and membership
The client was able to consolidate the three websites into one
First Findings
After interviewing the client and stakeholders, we learned more about the company, its mission, its services, and competitors. I ran an element analysis and feature comparison with four competitors’ websites.
Three of the four competitor sites had an explicit link in the navigation containing information explaining how or why the service works. This information was not present in the SelfHackathon website.
All competitors have multiple calls to action varying from logging in to a member portal, to starting/signing up for the service.
The SelfHackthon website only had the call to action to download the “11 confidence mind hacks” and sign up for the newsletter.
We ran a screener to select various people who use self improvement online programs. After their interview, I organized the findings in an affinity map, which helped me to recognized people’s behaviors, needs, pain and pleasure points, and their motivations.

Affinity map to find user’s behaviors
As a result of this research, the team found that people have two different prospectives when looking for self improvement programs:
One group sees self improvement as a holistic experience to balance all aspects of life
The other group sees self improvement as a tool to grow in their professional life

Nyssa wants a holistic self improvement experience
The research findings helped us to understand what the users are looking for while searching for Self improvement services. We proposed the following content highlights for Self Hackathon website:
Structure
Clearly structured information on the website
A program that is well structured and follows a clear process
Based on Self Hackathon mission and vision we prioritized and organized the information for better and faster reading and understanding.
Authority
Charles wants something grounded in science and empirical research
Nyssa wants a program that embraces a holistic understanding of human needs
Both want a teacher who is not dogmatic, and doesn’t pretend to be perfect
We proposed a page where founder and experts can present their research and sources of inspiration. The goal is to expose their constant learning (scientifically and holistically), and convey that they are not dogmatic instructors with the only truth.

Charles considers his professional success as the most important of all
Feedback
Both Charles and Nyssa want feedback on their progress
We proposed a “Test my confidence” questionnaire to provide users with a confidence baseline measurement. After joining the online program, users will be presented with information on their improvements in the pertinent areas.
Relevant to Me
Both Charles and Nyssa want material that are relevant to their specific needs
Charles wants programs that are customized for him
We proposed a program that customized the user needs based on a test that the user will complete after each online session. This will provide feedback as well as more customize material relevant to the user.

Site Map
The new website integrates the 3 different websites, showcase the company’s work, and the value of its service, as well as its experts, and workshops that were not showcased before.

Users that need feedback before sign up can click on the “test my confidence” questionnaire, review the results (Feedback), and then sign up for the program. Users can sign up directly skipping the “test my confidence” questionnaire.

In the past, the workshop service was not in any of the Self Hackathon websites, and it is promoted by word of mouth. By adding the workshop on the global navigation we showcase this service. We proposed a flow of 4 steps from home page to submit for a workshop

Sketches
Using design studio methodology, we grouped and discussed all our findings, the goals, the opportunities, and challenges of the company to create a unique and clean design. Everyone in the team sketched, presented - critique, defended their ideas, and iterated, which helped us to put together a solid design.
User testing
Prototype iterations
At the Global navigation, the link “live events” was not clear. Users prefer the word workshops
We changed “live events” to “workshops”The Live Event/ “workshop page” lacked pictures of the program speakers. People felt annoyed, since they want to know about the speakers beforehand.
We added space for speakers’ photos, brief bio and description of the programUsers expect to find more information about the teachers on the Experts page
We recommended that the expert’s photo is linked to their LinkedIn or blog so the user can learn more about themUsers found group registration difficult to use
We add the possibility to register up to 3 people at once. We also considered that Self Hackathon workshops have limited space per workshop (This was a client’s request)
